In a resounding display of regional political dominance, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) on Friday secured a sweeping mandate in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held on April 12. The Council administers around 70% of the State’s geographical area and is home to nearly 15 lakh people.
Led by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the TMP captured 24 out of the 28 contested seats, effectively consolidating its influence over the State’s indigenous heartland.
The outcome marked a significant decline for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which saw its representation in the council drop to just four seats, down from the eight it held previously.
Other major political players, including the CPI(M), the Congress, and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), failed to open their accounts, leaving the council as a two-party arena dominated heavily by the TMP.
The election had seen a robust democratic participation with a voter turnout of 83.50%, surpassing the levels recorded in 2021. Despite their alliance at the State government level, the BJP and Tipra Motha contested these local polls as rivals, a strategy that ultimately saw the TMP expand its 2021 tally of 18 seats to a commanding two-thirds majority.
Responding to the results, Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed his gratitude to party workers for their resilience. While acknowledging the mandate with “humility,” he noted that the defeat serves as an educational moment for the BJP to regroup and refine its future strategies.

Conversely, BJP Minister Ratan Lal Nath suggested that the voting pattern was influenced more by “sentiment” than by the developmental work carried out by the government over the last eight years.
From the TMP camp, Pradyot Debbarma focused on a message of reconciliation. Emphasizing that “love has triumphed over hatred,” he urged his supporters to celebrate responsibly and avoid any form of communal or political violence. He reiterated that all residents of the state, regardless of party affiliation, remain brothers within the “Tiprasa” identity.
The TTAADC, established under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, governs nearly 70% of Tripura’s landmass and is home to a third of its population. This victory reinforces the TMP’s “Greater Tipraland” platform and cements its status as the primary voice for the state’s tribal communities for the next term.
