- Between January and May this year, Brajesh Prajapati (30) lured and raped at least 7 tribal girls in Sidhi district of the State. And all this by calling the victims posing as a female college teacher using a voice changing app and luring them by offering scholarships. He would then ask them to come to a deserted place for discussing their scholarships and raped them.
- “So far, 4 cases have been registered against the accused and there are five survivors in these 4 cases. One girl went to meet him with a minor and the accused also raped the minor. The POCSO Act has also been invoked against him. During interrogation the accused has admitted of raping 7 girls so far, the details of the other two survivors are being verified,” Sidhi SP Ravindra Verma told media persons.
- “We have arrested the accused, Brajesh Prajapati, and two other men, who assisted him by providing the phone number of the first victim. The accused used a voice-changing application that is available on the app store and used that to change his voice to a female college professor to target these women. All the victims are from the tribal community and belong to financially weak families,” the SP said.
- The police said the accused is a labourer who learnt how to use the application on YouTube. He procured the phone number of the first victim with the help of the co-accused, Rahul Prajapati and Sandeep Prajapati, the police added.
- “He called that woman to an isolated spot promising to provide her scholarship money. Posing as a female college professor, he told the woman that her son would meet her and escort her to their home, where the scholarship would be disbursed. The accused then took the victim to an isolated spot in a forested area, where he raped her at an abandoned jhopri (hut) belonging to his family,” SP Verma said.
- While he would rob the women of their phones and threaten them with dire consequences, he would also look for contacts of other women on their phones. The police said the number of victims could be more but none of the survivors have complained of gangrape.
