Ranchi
Born in an ordinary middle-class family, Sandhya Tirkey, never had any formal training in music. The singing class in her school was the first place where she had shyly and reluctantly displayed her singing talent, and learned some lessons for life about music and singing.
In her own assessment, she is “nothing more than a good bathroom singer”. She wanted to become a teacher to get rid of her financial woes with a steady job in hand. More so, since her mother, Shilwanti Lakra, is also a primary school teacher.
It was her mother who raised her after her father, Budhdeo Oraon, lost his private sector job having met with an accident over two decades back. He passed away about five years ago.
Having secured a Master’s degree in English from Dr Shyama Prasad Mukerjee University in Ranchi, Sandhya enrolled herself in a B.Ed course. Though her primary aim was to become a teacher, music was her real passion.
And as fate, and luck, would have it, Sandhya’s singing prowess was noticed by a local Music Director and Producer Raju Oraon. He also noticed her writing skills.
This was when India was undergoing the Covid-19 induced lockdown. The girl, who was often the best performer at various social gatherings in her Ratu locality, was headed for fame beyond borders.
Despite his limited resources, Raju formed a troupe to explore the various entertainment platforms of social media and his ill-equipped studio and semi-skilled troupe notwithstanding, his troupe made a decent debut and chugged ahead.
His K-Series Music carved out a niche for itself in no time with the main performer Sandhya in great demand from various quarters.
“I have received several good proposals from producers of Hindi and Bhojpuri music albums. But I love my Jharkhandi languages. I want to serve my mother tongue first,” Sandhya tells The Indian Tribal.
She is serving indeed.
She is now a well-known face in the Jharkhand music industry. The music video of her Nagpuri number ‘Jahiya Se Dekhlo Sajan’ has had more than 46 million views so far on various social media forums combined viz., YouTube, Facebook and Instagram among others and also garnered proportional numbers of likes and followers.
Her other popular numbers in local languages released by K-Series Music too are doing brisk business. Her fame has been making her the star attraction at cultural events like the Tribal Youth Fest held a Morhabadi grounds in Ranchi even as she is being much sought after to grace various social dos.
The huge traction her songs is getting has inspired the whole troupe and she feels she is headed for bigger things and bigger platforms to showcase her talent.
