Durg
Posted as the medical officer at the mother-child unit in the maternity ward of Durg district hospital, Dr Vinita Dhurwe has made a name for herself.
Last week, she carried out a delivery of twin babies (a baby boy and a baby girl). The twin babies were delivered by Supela-based Menaka Verma of steel city Bhilai. Nothing extraordinary one would say except the fact that this was Gynaecologist Dr Dhurwe’s 111th delivery of twins, all between 2022 and 2024.
A total of 210 twin babies have been delivered in the Durg district hospital in the last two and half years. And of them, 111 deliveries have been conducted by Dr Dhurwe.
Last month, Dr Dhurwe achieved the unique feat of conducting 100 deliveries of twins. “I myself and also my friends and colleagues have been finding out if any other doctor has achieved these numbers or not, both nationally and internationally. But so far, while we haven’t come across any such instance, we have also not applied for registering it in any record books,” Dr Dhurwe told The Indian Tribal.
But how did it all start? “It so happened that after I got to conduct the deliveries of four-five twins, I developed a keen interest in it and asked my colleagues to refer all twins’ cases to me and I started counting them. In 2022, I set a target of 22 deliveries of twins but fell one short. I performed deliveries of 21 twin babies in 2022. The numbers rose to 30 deliveries in 2023.”
When the figure breached the 50-mark, she felt that she could even make a new record in this regard and set for herself the target of deliveries of 100 twin babies. She also tried to find out at her own level whether any doctor ever crossed the figure of 100 twin deliveries or not.
Dr Dhurwe said that with the desire to achieve the milestone, she used to reach the hospital whenever she got a call from the hospital regarding the delivery of twin babies. Her colleagues too helped her in her endeavour. So, whenever a case of delivery of twin babies came to the Durg district hospital, they referred it to her.
Interestingly, as luck would also have it, with cases of twins-bearing women also continuing to pour in at the hospital, Dr Dhurwe performed deliveries of 61 twin babies in the last eight months of this year alone.
With the Menaka Verma delivery, a baby boy and a baby girl, Dr. Dhurwe achieved the unique number milestone of 111 twin babies.
Dr. Hemant Kumar Sahu, Civil Surgeon, has high praise for Dr Dhurwe. He pointed out that besides the rare feat, she is also a compassionate human being as she takes special care of poor patients, who too flock to her.
Dr Dhurwe completed her MBBS from Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College in Raipur in 2002. After completion of her internship, she joined the medical service in 2003 at the then Durg district’s Amadola primary health centre in Doundi block.
She was also posted in Doundi, Rasmada, Dargaon and Ahiwara primary health centres in the then Durg district. She joined the Durg district hospital in 2011.
Talking about herself further, Dr Dhurwe said that as her father was a public servant in the undivided Madhya Pradesh State government and she was born in Pandariya village in Bilaspur district. “It was my childhood dream to become a doctor to serve mankind,” she said. Overall, Dr Dhurwe has so far carried out over 17,000 deliveries including 6,480 caesarean deliveries.
