Tribal students in Shahdol Division studying in Class 10 and 12 and aspiring to crack the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to become doctors will get such mentors who have themselves cleared the tough competitive exam and are undergoing MBBS courses at the Shahdol Medical College.
The mentors will be mostly MBBS first year students, who number around 200. They will go to the schools and guide the medical aspirants on how to crack the NEET by sharing their own experiences, clearing their doubts and solving their questions among others.
Tribal children, whose parents are mostly illiterate or have only basic education, are often deprived of proper guidance at home. As a result, they go to other States or cities to prepare for competitive examinations.
Against this backdrop, Shahdol Divisional Commissioner Rajiv Sharma planned the scheme to ensure that these children do not have to leave their hometown and get the best guidance. “I have discussed my proposal with the dean and professors at the medical college, and interacted with the school education department. The medical students are ready to guide the school children,” Sharma, who is also credited with promoting sports among the tribals in the Division, said.
Class 12 students aspiring to become doctors will be prepared for the NEET exam by medical students studying MBBS at Shahdol Medical College, he said.
Sharma said though there is an abundance of tribal talent in Madhya Pradesh they are unable to achieve their goals due to the absence of proper guidance. In future, efforts will also be made to provide timely guidance to the children studying in class 8 and 10, he revealed.
Sharma pointed out that on March 23, a dialogue between the class 12 science students and the MBBS students will be held at the Shahdol Medical School auditorium, after which the medical students will spread across various schools for tutoring them. This will help the capable kids to acquire the skills required to ace NEET.
