A rare vegetarian dish, Muli khleh, a radish salad with perilla seeds, is considered beneficial for people with cholesterol issues. It requires one medium radish sliced in fine rounds or half moons, two tablespoons of perilla seeds roasted and ground into a powder, half a small finely sliced onion, one finely diced green chili and one tablespoon of lemon juice.
Muli khleh, a radish salad with perilla seeds, is a rare vegetarian dish in this part and is considered beneficial for people with cholesterol issues.
“All these need to be mixed together. On adding the lemon, the ground perilla seeds become slightly milky in texture and start coating the radish. Then the preparation should be set aside for 30 minutes to allow marination before eating,” says Tara Shruti Goswami, a Shillong-based tribal culinary expert and yoga artiste.
Perilla seeds lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol.
Other lesser known dishes include Pashor Kait salad (banana stem heart salad); Doh Neiiong (chicken or pork dry curry with black sesame seeds); and Putharo.
