Ten days since 14 civilians were killed by security forces in separate incidents of firing, the Konyak Union (KU), the apex body of the Konyak Naga tribe in Nagaland’s tragedy-stuck Mon district, on Monday announced a “total restriction of Indian Military force convoy and patrolling” within Konyak soil “until justice is delivered to those killed”.
The statement jointly signed by KU, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), which is the apex women’s body, and Konyak Student Union also said that the Konyak community would “cut off all forms of public relation” with the forces.
“No Konyak villages councils/students or any society must accept any forms of developmental packages/assistances from the armed forces,” the statement said. Those village councils, students and societies who have received compensation packages must “immediately denounce any forms of assured packages” from the forces, the statement added.
The Konyak Union further announced that it will not allow any “military recruitment rallies” within Mon district. All customary landowners have been asked to immediately denounce all forms of public relation with the Indian Military Forces, including past land agreements allotted for setting up military base camps (operating points) in all areas within the jurisdiction.
The top tribal body urged people not to engage in any form of leisure activities, including attending night bazaars, picnic and other entertainment activities within Mon District.
Pre-schedule programmes like weddings and church events among others will remain exempted though, it said.
The KU had, on December 7, asked all units of the 27 Assam Rifles to vacate Mon district. On Monday, it listed out the “non-cooperation regulations”.
