Manipur CM invites tribal MLAs for Assembly session

Chief Minister N Biren Singh has invited 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs to attend the upcoming session of the 12th Manipur legislative Assembly. “I am inviting them personally to join the session. We will cooperate,” CM said. The Manipur Assembly session is scheduled from July 31 to August 12. The CM’s statement came on the sidelines of an event held at the Chief Minister’s residence on Thursday. The 10 tribal MLAs, seven from the ruling BJP, two from the Kuki People’s Alliance and one Independent, have skipped two previous Assembly sessions amid their demand for a separate administration for the tribals, following the unrest and violence in the northeastern state which has been going on since May 3, 2023.

Implement NRC as tribal population on decline: BJP MP

BJP MP from Godda, Jharkhand, Nishikant Dubey on Thursday called for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) claiming that the Muslim population was rising exponentially because of Bangladeshi intruders while the tribal population was on a decline. Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, he said the tribal population in his home state had decreased by 10 per cent and that tribal women were getting married to Bangladeshi men. He alleged that the ruling JMM was not taking any action to address the decline in the tribal population. He said: “The Constitution is in danger. We talk about the poor, tribals, Dalits and women here. Whether it is the Central or State government, the aim is to reach out to each citizen. I come from the Santhal Paragana area. When it was separated from Bihar and formed part of Jharkhand, the population of tribals in the area was 36 per cent. Now, it is 26 per cent. Where have the 10 per cent tribals gone?”
